Descriptions give your reader a mental image of your characters’ setting and help set the tone you’re going for. For example, describing Carol’s clothing can let you “shorthand” her mental state: Is she wearing her Alexandria camouflage, or her badass boots? If she’s still flying under the radar, you know her footwear is going to be something less confrontational than her Doc Martens. Physical surroundings also give the reader a sense of what’s coming next: are they hiding out in a dank basement, or sitting in the sunshine on the front steps of a comfortable house?
